Our club

Atlantic Canada’s biggest rugby family

Founded in 1976 from a meeting of former Halifax Hamsters at the Lighthouse Tavern, the Tars have grown into the largest rugby football club in Atlantic Canada.

We field two senior men’s sides, two senior women’s sides, a junior women’s 7s programme and our own mini and youth rugby contingent. Our alumni play professionally and represent Canada internationally, but what we’re proudest of is the number of Tars who coach, referee and volunteer at every level of the game in Nova Scotia.

From a suspended side called the Hamsters to sixteen McCurdy Cups, the Tars have been part of Halifax rugby for half a century. Every 2026 membership includes a 50th-anniversary training shirt and socks.

Home ground

The Admiral Field House at Graves-Oakley

Our home in Spryfield: pitch, clubhouse and the best post-match atmosphere in the province.

Built by the members with a $40,000 title contribution from Admiral, the field house opened its doors after foundations went in during the summer of 2021. Every home game day ends here.

Named for the sailors who brought rugby to Halifax
